The history of yoga is long and stepped in tradition. It has been passed down from teacher to student. Its knowledge has grown over thousands of years and evolving slowly to the current yoga. The ideas of yoga were often guarded and kept as a secret in the past until quite recent.
Although you can not get evidence to prove the age of yoga, it is mostly believed to be over 10,000 years old. It was first practiced in Indus-sarasvati region of India. The earliest proof of yoga was found on artifacts dated back to 3000 B.C. The artifacts were first found by a team of archeologists who were led by Sir Mortimer Wheeler.
Another one was found in the area of river Indus region, by Sir John Marshall.
Furthermore, there are various texts talking about yoga. For example, the Rig-Veda text which is an Indian ancient sacred collection of Vedic Sanskrit hymns. There is still another text which is known as yoga sutras. It was compiled by Sage Patanjali. He described the eight limbs of yoga which make up what is known today as ashtangi or raja yoga.

In the year 1888, a man who is known as Tirumalai krishnamachary was born. He later became the father of the recent yoga. He taught many students who are famous today. People like B.K.S Iyengar, T.K.V Desikachar and Pattabhi Jois. Iyenger became one of the most respected yoga teachers in the modern world.
In the year 1960, the interest of yoga was very popular in the west. A popular man known as Swami Vivekananda added some achievements of yoga by taking it to America. When he addressed the congress in 1893, he discussed the path of yoga.
Due to his speech, it began to blossom quickly and practiced in many parts of the country. It has since gained majority of people in the United States. When you know the history and trends of yoga, you will be able to practice it and sooner or later come to realize the richness it has to offer.
